What is Urban Dynamics Institute?
Thanks for visiting the Urban Dynamics Institute (UDI). We have been serving the Waterbury, Connecticut area for over 96 years. Our goal is to foster a strong sense of community between socially, economically and ethnically diverse groups in the Greater Waterbury Area through a comprehensive range of programs and activities for adults, children and families.
UDI Sponsored Programs
- The Hubie Williamson Scholarship
UDI presents this scholarship to a high school senior from one of Waterbury’s six public high schools. As Hubie Williamson is a graduate of an historically black institution, North Carolina Central University, this scholarship will be awarded to a student entering an historically black college or university.
UDI is seeking a donor to match one-half of the funds for the scholarship, up to a $5,000 gift ceiling. Plans are underway to raise funds for the HW Scholarshipthrough the following programs: Inaugural Golf Classic, Pearl Street and Match-point Tennis Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, and the UDI Souvenir Brochure to be displayed at the scholarship dinner.
- Affordable Housing Impact Program
UDI serves as an advocate for affordable housing opportunities in the greater Waterbury area.
- Community Wellness Program
UDI provides healthcare information, before and during all programs and activities sponsored by UDI. We are looking forward to creating a community garden to make good food choices available within the neighborhoods that we serve.
- Neighborhood Mentoring Program
In conjunction with the Department of Education, Police, and Fire Departments, UDI is helping to provide quailty programs to families by putting them in touch with educational, social, cultural and recreational programs that lend themselves to the development of a better community.
- Open Mic Forums
UDI provides topical information on subjects of importance to the community by hosting debates that offer choices and opportunities to communities. Through this program, UDI also offers public meetings on important subjects, including housing, education, crime, transportation, jobs, global-warming, recreation, healthcare and taxes.
- Match-Point Tennis Program - UDI and Webster Bank continue to provide quality tennis to youth and adults, and encourage young people to join school and recreational tennis programs for proper instruction. This summer, Webster Bank sponsored the J. Francis Smith Children's Instructional Clinic and the Patricia H. Mayfield Tennis Salute (see photo at top).
- Cross Country Summer Trip - UDI sponsored a 3 1/2 week summer trip 35 years ago for at-risk children to see the landscape of the Grand Canyon! Plans are now in motion for future trips.
